One Canadian woman is dead and thirteen more tourists are nursing wounds after a lone gunman turned the Teotihuacan pyramids into a shooting gallery on Monday. The UNESCO Heritage site, usually the backdrop for influencers and history buffs, remained closed on Tuesday as National Guard troops in combat gear paced the ancient stone steps. According to Mexico’s security cabinet, seven of the victims suffered gunfire wounds while others were injured during the frantic scramble down the steep Pyramid of the Sun.

President Claudia Sheinbaum had previously bragged about her 2,000 military vehicles and 33 drones, but they were nowhere to be found when the trigger was pulled. The government is desperately trying to salvage the aesthetic of the summer’s FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting. Per the security cabinet, new ‘security perimeters’ are being set up around airports and stadiums, a move that feels more like a late cover charge than a real safety plan.

For the jet-set planning their summer itineraries, the pyramids have officially moved from ‘must-see’ to ‘avoid at all costs.’ Security at tourist sites is being ‘beefed up,’ but for the Canadian family involved, the damage to the hospitality experience is permanent. If the National Guard cannot protect a world-famous landmark two months before kickoff, the World Cup VIP suites may be lonelier than expected.
