Decency still matters

Nayef Samaro, 26, lay still in a hospital bed in Nablus on Sunday. His body was brought to the hospital while his wife was in the next room giving birth. He was killed during an Israeli military raid in the West Bank. The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed his death. He will never hold his child. He will never hear its first cry. This is the cruel reality of the “administrative triage” practiced by world powers.

In southern Lebanon, the violence continues despite a ceasefire. Sanaa Khalil, 35, lay in a different hospital in the city of Tyre. She lost both of her legs this week. She was working in a banana plantation when an airstrike hit. She was a simple farmer trying to earn a living. Now, her life is forever changed. Seven people were killed in that raid alone.

These are not just numbers on a map. They are fathers, mothers, and neighbors. Nayef Samaro was a man with a future. Sanaa Khalil was a woman with a job. Their lives have been torn apart by a conflict they did not start. The Israeli military said it was responding to “terrorists” who threw rocks. The Palestinian Red Crescent said the raid was a violation of peace. Both sides speak, but the blood continues to flow.

We must mourn the loss of youth. Every life is a gift from God. When we treat people as tactical targets, we lose our own humanity. The streets of Nablus are filled with mourning. The banana groves of Lebanon are stained with blood. We ask for a return to the sanctity of the person. Let the new life being born in Nablus find a world at peace, not a world at war.
