Court Extends Access to Harmful Mail Order Abortion Pill #
Justice Samuel Alito sat in his Washington chambers on Monday to issue a temporary stay. He paused a lower court order that would have limited access to mifepristone. This means the drug can still be sent through the mail until at least May 11. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals had ordered that doctors must prescribe the drug in person. Now, that order is on hold.
Mifepristone was first approved by the FDA in 2000. Since then, its use has expanded. It is now part of a two-drug regimen used to end pregnancies. Millions of these pills have been sent through the mail. This has turned local mailboxes into portals for tragedy. The Fifth Circuit argued that this practice is unsafe. They wanted to return to a standard of care that protects the health of women.
Two drug manufacturers filed an emergency petition to stop the restrictions. They argue that their business will suffer if they cannot mail the drug. This paper believes that the sanctity of life should come before the profits of the chemical industry. We have seen a steady erosion of the moral fabric of our medical system. Telemedicine should be for healing, not for harm.
The Supreme Court now has more time to weigh this case. We pray they find the courage to uphold the dignity of the unborn. Justice Alito’s move is only a pause. It is not a final ruling. The nation waits to see if the law will protect the most vulnerable among us. A society is judged by how it treats its children. By that standard, we are failing.
