The Moralist

Decency still matters

Digital Golems Replace the Human Soul in Hollywood #

The news that Ben Affleck has sold a 'secret' AI company to Netflix should send a shiver down the spine of anyone who values the truth of the human image. We are entering an era of digital golems—synthetic actors who possess the likeness of a man but none of the spirit. These AI models are trained to understand 'visual logic,' but they can never understand the depth of human suffering, the spark of real joy, or the weight of a moral choice. They are hollow shells designed for the convenience of a spreadsheet.

This technology is not a tool for creators; it is a weapon against the dignity of the person. In Germany, we already see the dark side of this 'Ghost Era,' where AI-generated porn is used to humiliate and destroy the reputations of real women. When we detach the human face from the human soul, we invite a culture of total deception. If we cannot believe our own eyes when we see a face on a screen, how can we hope to maintain a shared reality?

We must support those who stand for the 'Tilly Tax' and other measures to protect human labor and artistic truth. Art is a bridge between souls, a way for one person to say to another: 'I have felt this too.' A machine cannot say that. It can only calculate the most likely arrangement of pixels to trigger a response. To replace the actor with the algorithm is to tell the audience that their humanity is replaceable too.
