Global South Smashes Big Pharma Weight Loss Monopoly #

Wednesday, 25 March 2026 · words

In a rare victory for the global poor, the Western pharmaceutical monopoly on weight-loss drugs has finally shattered. As patents for semaglutide expire, factories in India and China are flooding the market with $15-a-month generics. For years, Novo Nordisk and its ilk have held the health of millions hostage behind predatory pricing. Now, the wall has been breached. Predictably, the corporate reaction has been to retreat into 'premium' territory, with the FDA rushing through approvals for high-dose variants to maintain high-margin sales in the West. They will tell you these generics are dangerous, but the real danger is the balance sheet of Big Pharma. This is what it looks like when the public commons is reclaimed. While the American middle class is trapped in a cycle of insurance co-pays and manufactured scarcity, the rest of the world is taking their health back for the price of a lunch.
