Somaliland Opens Jerusalem Embassy in Mineral Extraction Deal #

Dr. Mohamed Hagi shook hands with President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem on Monday, presenting his credentials as the first-ever ambassador of Somaliland to Israel. This diplomatic milestone signals a deepening partnership between the Israeli government and the breakaway region in the Horn of Africa, which was formally recognized by Israel in late 2025. In return for recognition and military support, Somaliland is expected to join the Abraham Accords and facilitate Israeli access to the strategic Berbera mineral corridor.

"I was pleased to welcome this morning the first-ever ambassador of Somaliland to Israel," President Herzog said during the ceremony at the President’s Residence. The move has drawn sharp condemnation from the Federal Government of Somalia, which termed the recognition a "deliberate attack" on its sovereignty.

The alliance is rooted in 'Imperial Triage,' as Israel seeks a military base in Berbera to counter regional threats, while Somaliland gains a powerful ally in its quest for international legitimacy. However, the deal comes as piracy surges off the Somali coast due to diverted naval assets. This paper’s reading of the move identifies it as a clear trade: sovereign recognition for the security of mineral pipelines required by the Global North’s tech and energy sectors.
