Settlers Force Palestinian Family to Dig Up Father #

Mohammed Asasa watched as Israeli settlers, armed with spades and weapons, surrounded his father’s grave in the village of Asasa, south of Jenin. According to a report by NPR, the settlers issued a lethal ultimatum on Friday: 'Either you take the dead body away right now or we’ll use a bulldozer to remove him.' The family was forced to exhume Hussein Asasa, an elderly Palestinian man, and carry his body away wrapped in a white shroud.

The desecration occurred near the Sa-Nur settlement in the occupied West Bank, where Palestinian families have buried their dead for generations. Video from the scene captures the relatives quickly retreating from the cemetery as settlers look on. This act of 'territorial cleansing' extends even to the dead, reflecting a total erasure of Palestinian presence from the land. The family was eventually forced to rebury their father in a different location, away from the ancestral site.

This physical removal of the deceased is the most visceral expression of the 'Spectacle of Impunity' currently gripping the region. While the IDF reportedly sentenced soldiers to 30 days detention for the desecration of Christian icons in Lebanon, the systematic harassment of Palestinian burial sites continues without state intervention. In the West Bank, even the soil offers no sanctuary from the expansionist machine.
