Hollywood performers secured a four-year pact this week to protect biological labor from the encroachment of autonomous AI. The SAG-AFTRA board approved the contract on Monday, which includes a controversial plan to merge the union’s two pension funds by 2028. According to Variety, the deal was accelerated to avert a health plan funding crisis that has plagued the union since the 2023 strikes.

A key pillar of the agreement is the 'Biological Velvet Rope,' an institutional fortification designed to exclude fully AI-generated actors and scripts from major industry recognitions like the 2027 Oscars. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) also secured a significant bailout of its health fund as part of the broader labor realignment.

Despite these gains, internal friction remains high over the pension merger. Some SAG members warned that combining funds with AFTRA will weaken the stability of the pension plan for older actors. This paper’s reading of the pact suggests that while human labor has won a temporary reprieve from synthetic competition, the price of that security is a further consolidation of union resources that may leave the most vulnerable members at risk.
