GOP Redlines Louisiana Maps to Purge Black Voters #
SENATOR CALEB KLEINPETER stared at a red-lined map in a humid Baton Rouge committee room on Tuesday. The Republican-led Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee advanced a plan to liquidate one of Louisiana’s two majority-Black congressional districts. Nearly 180,000 early ballots already cast in the Saturday primary will not be counted. Sallie Davis, a voter in the crosshairs, told reporters she fears her voice is being erased. Governor Jeff Landry declared an emergency to bypass the existing map. Senator Sam Jenkins warned against a "6-0 map that would eliminate all majority-Black districts." This map is a surgical strike against the Voting Rights Act. The "Hollow State" no longer bothers with the pretense of representation; it simply redraws the perimeter to suit the party in power. Partisan cartography has replaced the ballot as the primary tool of democratic suppression.
