Amazon Encloses Metabolic Health With Same-Day Weight-Loss Pills #
Mike Doustdar, CEO of Novo Nordisk, announced a landmark distribution deal with the Trump administration on Friday that brings metabolic health directly into the Amazon logistics ecosystem. Oral versions of the blockbuster weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy are now available for same-day delivery via Amazon Pharmacy. The company has also debuted in-office pickup at One Medical locations, effectively bypassing traditional community pharmacies. A major new study from the University of Padova confirmed that these semaglutide treatments help adults over 65 lose more than 15% of their body weight.
“We were very happy that we were able to make a deal with the Trump administration,” Doustdar told reporters, adding that the goal was to ensure these medications “don’t become a product just for the rich.” However, the integration of these drugs into Amazon’s proprietary delivery network suggests a deepening of the Metabolic Divide. While elites in the United States access premium oral versions via same-day drones, the Global South is left with $15-a-month generics. The subscription body is now a logistical reality, where health is maintained through a corporate delivery interface.
The convenience of the Amazon Ozempic kiosk hides a structural deskilling of the medical profession. By moving diagnostic and dispense functions into an automated retail kiosk, the state is allowing private capital to enclose the functions of the public health system. As Amazon Pharmacy expands its reach, the neighborhood pharmacist is replaced by a screen and a delivery driver, further isolating patients within a closed-loop corporate health market.
