Navy Veteran Charged with DHS Murder Dies in Jail #
Olaolukitan Adon Abel was found unresponsive in a DeKalb County jail cell on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old Navy veteran had been charged in a string of shootings near Atlanta that killed three people, including DHS auditor Lauren Bullis. Bullis was walking her dog when she was targeted in what police described as a random attack. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin had used the case to criticize previous administration policies, raising concerns about Abel's naturalization process. Abel's roommates told reporters the shootings occurred after an "intense argument over the air conditioning" in their home. The veteran’s death in custody ends a case that had become a flashpoint for rhetoric regarding border security and administrative failure. Bullis, 40, was one of two women killed in the attack. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released a cause of death for Abel. His death leaves the families of the victims without a trial and highlights the hollowing out of mental health and veteran support systems.
