Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Tuesday that her government has suspended a long-standing defense cooperation deal with Israel. This move reflects a sudden diplomatic realignment following Donald Trump’s public attacks on Pope Leo XIV and his criticism of Meloni’s lack of support for the Iran war. According to sources close to the matter, the decision was made by Meloni alongside Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. Trump had previously called Meloni's defense of the Pope “unacceptable,” signaling a fracture in the transatlantic alliance of the nationalist right.

As Meloni’s hold over the Italian state appears to weaken, a progressive challenge is gathering momentum in the port city of Genoa. Mayor Silvia Salis, a 40-year-old former Olympic hammer thrower, has emerged as a potential unifier for the left. Unlike the national leadership, Salis has prioritized the needs of young people and the working class, according to business consultant Giulia Bianchi. “She’s been a breath of fresh air,” Bianchi said, contrasting the mayor's direct engagement with the calculated ambiguity of the central government. In the shadow of these geopolitical shifts, the rise of Salis suggests a growing demand for a politics that values human rights over the hierarchy of people currently dictated by hardline administrations.
