The red dust of Piauí State, Brazil, is the new frontline in a quiet war for the physical inputs of the next century. This week, Origen Resources and several other transnational firms moved to secure 33,000 hectares of rare earth deposits, even as the Brazilian government debates a new 'Terrabras' initiative to mandate state-run refining. The scramble for minerals is no longer a free market; it is 'Mineral Imperialism,' where the US and its allies utilize price floors and diplomatic weight to block Chinese dominance.

In Washington and Canberra, a $3.5 billion subsidy for nickel is being framed as security, but for the communities in the Global South, it is the same extraction with a different flag. The goal is to establish a Western 'resource fortress' that can withstand Chinese price manipulation. Yet, as foreign capital pours into Brazilian soil, the local population sees little of the value. The minerals are extracted, the earth is scarred, and the 'value-added' refining happens elsewhere.

Brazil’s director-general of mining, Mauro Sousa, insists that a state-owned company is not yet on the table, but the pressure for sovereign control is rising. The 'Isaac Accords' signed between Israel’s Netanyahu and Argentina’s Milei this week further signal a shift toward a Western Hemisphere resource bloc designed to bypass traditional international norms. This is the new geography of power: a world where environmental laws and local rights are paved over in the rush to secure the lithium and cobalt that will power the elite’s green transition.
