Tetiana Sokol, 54, huddled in her Kyiv hallway with her dog as flashes of light shattered her windows and the floor shuddered from a blast wave. Russia launched 324 drones and three ballistic missiles in a single night, part of a massive bombardment that disabled 16 people and left scores wounded across the country. As the sky over Ukraine burns, the American state is moving its protective shields elsewhere. The Pentagon has begun the strategic withdrawal of Patriot missile batteries from the European front, redirecting these vital defenses to the Persian Gulf to secure energy corridors.

This is the cold mathematics of Imperial Triage. The administration is prioritizing the flow of crude oil over the survival of a sovereign people. By moving air defenses to guard oil terminals in the Gulf, Washington has effectively signaled that the Ukrainian power grid is an acceptable loss in the global ledger of capital. While Western leaders offer platitudes about democracy, their physical assets are being deployed to insulate the extraction machines of the Middle East.

"The level of equipment and sophistication has risen," says Eric Reeves, a researcher at the Chad-Sudan border. "This is increasingly a drone war, often conducted indiscriminately." In Sudan, the same logic of abandonment applies. While 15 US naval vessels enforce a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, 64 civilians were vaporized by autonomous drones at a maternity ward in Sudan. The world’s primary military power is no longer even pretending to provide global security. It is acting as a private security firm for the transit of fossil fuels, leaving the Global South and secondary allies to face the rain of machines alone.
